Reintegration Initiative

Approximately 300 Ex-offenders are released per month to the Greater Boston area where funding decreases have reduced the number of services available to ex-offenders matriculating back into society. The key to their post-release success is preparation for the return to society. To that end  in January 2003 STRive made it's Ruggles Station location a dedicated Ex-offender Workforce Development Training Program. By August 2005 there were two hundred eleven (211) graduates from the program and one hundred sixty-three (163) had obtained employment as a direct result of their program involvement. The remainder are actively engaged in their assisted job search or have become lost contacts.

Subsequently, at the behest of the Suffolk County Sherrifs Department, in response to a critical need for services and owing, in a large part, to STRIVE's demonstrated success as a workforce development training program for ex-offenders, STRIVE/Boston Employment Service, Inc. opened the STRIVE-SCHOC Program outlined below in June 2004

As an integral part of the Common Ground Institute (CGI) at the Suffolk County House of Correction, the STRIVE-SCHOC Reintegration Program’s ultimate goal is to prepare inmates for a successful transition to a working lifestyle by cultivating their interpersonal soft skills in an intensive, proactive, attitudinal training program. The program  exposes inmates to  attitudinal training  facilitated by a STRIVE trainer.  Afterwards they may receive OSHA Safety Certification Training through CGI along with classroom instruction in Painting, Carpentry and Landscaping, followed by a practicum through the Community Works Program.

Upon release the inmates may be referred for the follow-up segment  at one of the other Boston area STRIVE locations. The follow-up consist of an assessment to determine the need, if any, for a reinforcement of the attitudinal training, coupled with professional development training and placement assistance. This is generally done at The Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Center located in the MBTA'S Ruggles Station, but the services are also available at other STRIVE locations around the city.
